Our Programs

I Hear You Friendship Benches

The "I Hear You Friendship Benches" project responds to the universal need for a listening ear by creating a network of support for immigrants and refugees in London, Ontario. Through strategically placed "Friendship Benches" in public spaces, participants can engage in facilitated listening sessions, building peer connections and gaining access to essential resources. This initiative directly addresses the importance of verbalizing experiences for improved mental health.

Music Therapy

The Immigrants & Refugees Support Network (IRSN) offers music therapy as a key intervention to help immigrants and refugees process trauma, reduce stress, and build community connections through culturally adapted musical activities such as singing, instrument playing, and songwriting, facilitated by licensed therapists in both group and individual settings. The program emphasizes trauma-informed care, language development, and social integration while incorporating participants’ traditional music to foster cultural pride and emotional healing, though it faces challenges such as cultural resistance to unfamiliar therapeutic methods, logistical barriers like funding shortages for instruments and multilingual therapists, and stigma around mental health in some communities. Despite these obstacles, the program has proven benefits, including improved emotional well-being, reduced PTSD symptoms, enhanced communication skills, and stronger social bonds, making it a valuable but resource-dependent service that requires ongoing partnerships, community engagement, and sustainable funding to maintain its impact on the populations IRSN serves.

Dreams To Dollars

The Dreams to Dollars program at the Immigrants & Refugees Support Network (IRSN) empowers newcomers by providing essential financial literacy education, covering topics such as credit cards, credit scores, banking, savings, investments, and long-term financial planning through workshops, one-on-one coaching, and multilingual resources tailored to participants’ cultural and linguistic backgrounds. By demystifying the Canadian financial system, the program helps immigrants and refugees build credit, avoid predatory lending, save for the future, and achieve economic stability, though challenges such as language barriers, distrust of financial institutions, and varying levels of prior financial knowledge can hinder participation. Despite these obstacles, the program has proven benefits, including increased financial independence, reduced vulnerability to scams, improved access to loans and housing, and greater confidence in managing money, all of which contribute to long-term success in their new communities. Run by financial coaches and community partners, Dreams to Dollars combines classroom-style learning with practical tools like credit-building workshops, matched savings programs, and connections to ethical financial services, ensuring that participants not only gain knowledge but also apply it to real-life situations, ultimately bridging the gap between financial exclusion and economic empowerment for IRSN’s community.

School Drive

The School Drive program at the Immigrants & Refugees Support Network (IRSN) provides essential school supplies—including backpacks, lunch boxes, notebooks, pencils, uniforms, and hygiene kits—to newcomer children, ensuring they start the academic year with dignity and the tools needed to succeed, while also alleviating financial strain on low-income immigrant and refugee families who often face barriers such as limited budgets, language difficulties in navigating school requirements, or lack of familiarity with local education systems. By distributing donated and sponsored supplies through community partnerships, school liaisons, and pop-up events, IRSN not only promotes educational equity but also fosters a sense of belonging and confidence among students who might otherwise feel excluded, though challenges such as inconsistent donor contributions, varying supply demands across grade levels, and logistical hurdles in reaching isolated families can impact the program’s reach. Despite these limitations, the initiative delivers significant benefits, including increased school attendance, reduced stigma for children from under-resourced backgrounds, and stronger engagement between families and schools, ultimately helping young newcomers integrate more smoothly into their academic environments while reinforcing IRSN’s mission of empowering immigrant and refugee communities through practical support.

First 90 days

The First 90 Days program at the Immigrants & Refugees Support Network (IRSN) provides critical settlement support to newcomers by guiding them through essential post-arrival processes such as obtaining Social Insurance Numbers (SIN), health cards, and bank accounts, registering children for school, securing safe and affordable accommodation, accessing language classes, and connecting with employment services, all through a structured combination of one-on-one case management, multilingual orientation workshops, and a curated resource hub designed to simplify complex bureaucratic systems and reduce the overwhelm often faced during this transitional period. While the program significantly accelerates integration, boosts self-sufficiency, and prevents exploitation or missed deadlines—common pitfalls for newcomers unfamiliar with local systems—it also faces challenges such as fluctuating government policy changes, limited housing availability in high-demand areas, and occasional cultural resistance to asking for help, which can delay service uptake. Despite these hurdles, First 90 Days has proven instrumental in reducing settlement stress, fostering faster community connections, and laying a stable foundation for long-term success, with IRSN’s trained settlement workers and volunteer mentors providing not just logistical support but also reassurance and advocacy, ensuring that immigrants and refugees feel welcomed and equipped to navigate their new lives from day one.

Peer Support Groups

The Peer Support Groups program at the Immigrants & Refugees Support Network (IRSN) fosters emotional resilience and community connection by providing safe, culturally sensitive spaces where newcomers can share experiences, challenges, and coping strategies under the guidance of trained facilitators and peer mentors who have navigated similar journeys, addressing critical issues such as isolation, trauma, acculturation stress, and practical settlement hurdles through regular group meetings, thematic workshops, and social events designed to build trust and mutual aid while respecting participants’ diverse backgrounds and privacy concerns. While the program offers significant benefits—including reduced feelings of loneliness, increased emotional support, practical advice exchange, and strengthened social networks—it also faces potential objections, such as stigma around mental health in certain cultures, language barriers within mixed groups, or reluctance to discuss personal struggles openly, which IRSN mitigates through confidential small-group formats, culturally tailored approaches, and optional interpreter support. By combining structured discussions with informal bonding activities, the program not only helps participants navigate the complexities of resettlement but also empowers them to become peer leaders themselves, creating a sustainable cycle of support that aligns with IRSN’s mission of fostering belonging and empowerment within immigrant and refugee communities.
